Student Rabbi Sara Abrams was born in Gainesville, Florida and grew up in State
College, Pennsylvania and Madison Wisconsin. For her undergraduate studies, she
attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she majored in both Hebrew
and English Literature and had the good fortune to spend her junior year abroad
at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. After college, Sara lived in New York City
and was selected to be part of the New York City Teacher’s Fellowship where she
worked for two years as a public school teacher in the Bronx while earning a
master’s degree in Elementary Education from Hunter College. Most recently,
Sara earned a master’s degree in Religious Studies from University of Colorado at
Boulder. Her thesis was titled, “From Injury and Punishment to Interchange and
Relation: Rereading Judith Butler though the Dialogic Principle of Martin Buber.”
This work helped Sara to develop a critical understanding of the importance of
subjectivity – the need for each individual to be recognized as a subject and
empowered by agency to influence and change one’s surroundings. While in
Boulder, Sara worked extensively in the Jewish community where she taught
Hebrew and Jewish Studies, Yoga with Jewish Spirituality, and tutored B’nai
Mitzvah students. She also worked as a program coordinator for B’nai Tzedek,
a youth program that facilitates teen philanthropy, Tzedakah, and social action
projects. In her free time, Sara loves to hike, swim, travel, and practice yoga.
Sara is thrilled to be part of the Congregation Emanu-El Community!
